What is this?

Color harmony is about choosing colors that look good together. Just like musical chords, certain color combinations create pleasing visual relationships. Photographers use color harmony to plan wardrobe, set design, and even timing of outdoor shoots to get the right palette from nature.

The Color Wheel

Color harmony theory is rooted in the color wheel, which arranges hues in a circle based on their wavelength relationships. The HSL (Hue, Saturation, Lightness) model maps directly to the wheel: hue is the angle (0–360°), saturation is the distance from center, and lightness controls brightness. In photography, these relationships appear naturally — golden hour produces analogous warm tones, while a red barn against green fields is complementary.

Complementary

Two colors that sit directly opposite each other on the wheel (180° apart), such as blue and orange or red and green. This creates maximum contrast and visual energy. Great for making a subject pop against a background — think golden-hour portraits where warm skin tones contrast with a cool blue sky.

Analogous

Three colors that are neighbors on the wheel, typically within a 30–60° spread. They produce smooth, cohesive palettes with low contrast. Ideal for landscapes and mood-driven work — autumn foliage is a natural analogous palette of reds, oranges, and yellows.

Triadic

Three colors evenly spaced at 120° intervals around the wheel, such as red, yellow, and blue. Triadic schemes feel balanced and vibrant without the tension of complementary contrast. Use one dominant color and the other two as accents for the strongest results.

Split Complementary

A variation of complementary that uses the two neighbors of the opposite color instead of the opposite itself. This keeps the high contrast of complementary but reduces the visual tension, making it more versatile and forgiving. A popular choice for styled portrait sessions.

Tetradic (Double Complementary)

Four colors forming a rectangle on the wheel — essentially two complementary pairs. This offers the richest, most complex palette but requires careful balance. Let one color dominate and use the others as supporting accents to avoid a chaotic look.

Key factors

Harmony Type — The geometric relationship between colors on the wheel: complementary, analogous, triadic, split-complementary, or tetradic.

Hue — The base color angle on the wheel (0-360 degrees). This is the starting point for all harmony calculations.

Saturation — How vivid or muted the colors are. Lower saturation produces pastels and earth tones; higher saturation gives bold, vibrant palettes.

Lightness — Controls brightness. Adjusting lightness can make the same hue feel completely different — dark navy vs. sky blue are the same hue at different lightness.
